Music vs Love (part 1)

The connection of music and love.

Today I had an inspiring piano lesson.
Not that I learn a lot of pages of notes, or I learn the virtuosic techniques, but I learnt about fundamentals - The most primitive reasons of being a musician.

Human being is easily diverted. Manipulated.

When things get piled up, or when we are too 'into' it, we often forgot the original purpose. Like music. Too busy practicing the notes, getting everything right, fully informed of the history background, but somehow... sometime we still do not get it.

Why?

Because we forgot the basics! To enjoy and to love the music.

And also to breath and relax naturally.

Making adjustments and judgements is different. Musicians make adjustments when they perform. Probably adjustments to the acoustic, to the instrument, to the technique... many many adjustments while we play. (you think so easy to perform ah!? haha) However, we do adjustments so that we are not judged brutally? Or we do adjustments so that we fit the music and follow the flow of this universal language. For me, the most cruel critic is.. forever myself. I cannot help it, and i guess it's normal for every musician. But, to think in another way, judging is like a 'fear' haunting our thoughts. As my professor said:" every person has a skeleton in their closet". What a way to describe :p Seriously, that really gave me a light bulb! *blink* I'm giving myself unnecessary phobia and judgement when I haven't even start to play. Isn't that extra pressure and weight on my shoulders? That's why the first lesson, I actually learn how to relax my muscle.

Ironic isn't it. Relax is easy! We like to relax and watch tv. We like to relax and do nothing. We enjoy the feeling of relaxing. So, why the trouble to learn relaxing? Do we need to 'tell' our muscles to relax? Well... yes. (at least for me) I need to relax while I play. Too tensed up. Probably due to many reasons, coz i'm kancheong, little devils on my head are telling me that 'hey, don menxiasuikan' .. Hence, relaxation is what I need to learn this week. However, this act should not be done by purpose. It should be as natural as sleeping. I do realise sometimes I tensed up my shoulders or fingers or wrist. Probably that's why I have muscle aches all the time. Yes! I'm trying very very hard to relax! grr....

Anyway, after so much babbling, you must be thinking 'what the heck this girl's talking about?' Haha. It's alright. That's just my unedited, raw thoughts. Ok, here comes another professor. He says: Do we write because we have intuition? We find writing is a difficult task because we try so hard to write? JUST WRITE! Erm. Sorry. This is another class. haha! But, I think both the professors have something in common --- Don't try too hard. Just go with the flow!

This week's lesson: Thinking too much is bad for health. Go back to our natural default mode. In a Malaysian way: Aiya, very easy only mah!! (somehow, this has some truth in it)

p/s - will write about the connection of this lesson to the subject of love! stay tuned for part 2 ;)

it's interesting to read this... i think i've forgotten how to relax as well... back to basic... hmmm... inspiring... i guess no matter what we're doing, music or dentistry; we should enjoy it.. if not, that's when 'stress', 'tension', 'depression' come in...

thanks a lot for reminding me, my original intention here... i've been struggling for 4 yrs plus now looking for this word.... relax...

hugs...

nice one.

Don't like all these ppl learning piano for the sake of passing exam and getting extra cert.

Then they go "what was your exam song?"

And also, "I last time wasted so much money to go and learn music."

Remember, education is never a waste of money. Even though probably you'll never use it in ur future but it's the knowledge and learning process that you should appreciate. Good luck in your music :)
